DT2300 Sound In Interaction

Design challenge:

create a project around the theme of Soundscape of the Future, demonstrating theory on sound in interaction

Wish Upon A Meteor is a sonic sculpture that encompasses young people’s voices around the future. We have interviewed 4 young adults asking them about their hopes, dreams, fears and worries about what’s coming. The meteor offers a tangible way to connect to their thoughts and ideas, as well as facilitates play through application of audio filters.

Through application of Research Through Design (RtD) methodology, this project involved preparation of the audio in Audacity, building the meteor, creating capacitive sensors, MIDI mapping the capactive sensors in Ableton Live, as well as the user evaluation.

Using methods of design fiction, material speculation, and tangible affective interaction, the sound and capacitive sensors are intertwined to afford this unique locus of reflection. People confronted with the meteor characterized it as a vulnerable object, with the inseparable modalities of recorded voice and touch creating an intimate interaction. This cements its potential to instigate difficult and multifaceted conversations about the future.

Mu contributions:
construction of the meteor
creating capactive sensors
connecting Spoke microcontroller with the meteor
MIDI mapping
user evaluation: interview, Think Aloud, observations

Capacitive sensors with mapped functions
Material exploration - figeting with paper clay
Ableton Live set up
Experiments with conductive thread
